3rd Generation 2012 Apple TV is it still worth in 2024?

Limitations:

Software Updates: Apple discontinued software updates for this model in 2015, so it lacks the latest features and security updates.

App Support: It doesn't support the tvOS App Store, so you won't have access to new apps and services that are available on newer Apple TV models.

Streaming Quality: The 3rd generation Apple TV supports up to 1080p HD streaming but not 4K HDR, which is becoming the standard for streaming content.

Performance: The hardware is quite dated, leading to slower performance and potentially more lag when navigating or streaming.

Potential Uses:

Basic Streaming: If you only need a device for basic streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube, it could still be functional if these apps are still supported.

AirPlay: It can still be used as an AirPlay receiver, allowing you to stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to your TV.

Spare Device: It can serve as a backup or be used in secondary locations, like a guest room, where advanced features are less critical.

Alternatives: Newer Apple TV Models: Newer models support 4K HDR, have better performance, and access to a wide range of apps through the tvOS App Store. Other Streaming Devices: Consider alternatives like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Google Chromecast, which offer more features and better performance at a reasonable price.

Conclusion: While the 3rd Generation Apple TV can still serve basic streaming and AirPlay needs, its limitations and lack of support make it less appealing in 2024. Investing in a newer streaming device would provide a better experience and more features.
